After Dark Psychological Thriller Synopsis:


A girl is left at school after hours to get help and support work from her teacher. He is called away for a private matter and says he will be back within an hour. She holds an important role within the school. She is head girl and is trusted.

During the teachers depart the reception phone rings. She is met by a pool of blood at the reception and the words HELLO! steamed in the mirror. 
The torment of calls begin.
She is isolated and alone....... Or is she.

Analysis of Short Genre Stereotype Clip:

  1. How did you represent stereotypes (ethnicity)? For our clip we decided to focus on people of Asian ethnicity. We represented the stereotypes of people of asian ethnicity by finding a room and isolating them in order to show a that it was a room that mostly asian people used. In our production we made some of the asian people appear to conform to the stereotypes of asians, in that they are smart and intellectual. We also made another person appear to subvert against to stereotype in order to show both perspectives of asian stereotypes. To further indicate that our video was about asian stereotypes we included a segment which shows an interviewer interviewing an asian person asking them what they think about asian stereotypes. Moreover we by isolating these asian participants we reinforced the stereotype that they are hard working, showing that they don't socialize much with other people as they are to busy hard working.  We also made them to appear quite intellectual as we asked them to talk in a very formal and direct way which signifies sophistication and intellect which is how asians are perceived.This is how we portrayed asian stereotypes through our mise en scene clip.
  2. How did you represent the genre (documentary)? To represent the genre of our clip we initially indicated at the beginning what the clip was and what it was about by saying "This is a documentary on the stereotypes of asian people". Furthermore we had a narrator for the clip which was me to make it seem professional and to signify that the genre was a documentary, as most documentaries have a narrator or presenter telling the information. The narrator spoke very formal and direct throughout the clip to indicate professionalism as well as to show that he had an important role in the clip. Moreover we had the narrator interview some of the participants to indicate that it was a documentary as interviews are a common theme shown within documentaries. To further show the genre we were going to imbed an intro clip in order for introduce the documentary as shown in other popular documentaries such as Planet Earth. This shows how we represented the genre of our clip through mise en scene and sound.

Luther Practical Evaluation

  1. Our final product was acceptable. It had some good elements however there was room for improvement. We near enough followed the script but added our own creative flare on the film in order to make it different and unique. It quite clearly represented a TV crime drama based on the effects we used such as chroma key and desaturate. By this we made the clip black and white and portrayed the good guys in red to show an element of danger. The shift of power was clear as indicated by the black and red characters. Furthermore the death scene was realistic to some extent to show that the villain had the power.
  2. We worked effectively as a team taking on a fair amount of roles each and communicating and planning our scenes before filming them. This shows good teamwork as we communicated effectively in order to make our video clear. We also took great time in editing our video together and adding effects in order to strengthen the video.
  3. To represent the police officers in our video we made them talk formal to show that they were working men on a job. Furthermore to represent the police officers we changed our stance and slightly altered our voices to sound like a Londoner where the brief that we followed was set. Through our change of stance and voice it helped to portray our characters as police officers. Moreover the villain was dressed in a hood to distinguish that he was the bad person, to the audience.
  4. We used sound to represent the stereotype of one of the police officers by having him talk in a formal and direct way. This tells the audience that the character is in a job role and is taking orders or listening to information from his team. This was shown through the conversation of the police officer and the dispatch  However it was hard to represent the stereotypes of the characters through sound as there was not a lot of dialogue in the script.
  5. To represent the stereotypes of the characters through the mise en scene image we identified them in different ways. We made the police officers wear red to contrast agains the black background this was to distinguish the officers from the villain and to also show that there was an element of danger within the production, as red connotes danger. To show the stereotype of the villain we had him wear a black hood. This links to the stereotype of a teenager who are seen to be thugs and vandals  By linking our character to this stereotype we identified to the audience who the bad character was.
  6. From this task I learnt how to edit clip and cut parts off in order to shorten them, as well as how to add effects and transitions such as desaturation and chroma key. In terms of camera work I learnt how to portray characters in certain ways through different camera movement as camera shots and angles. Such as zooming to show a character or object of significance  Or a high angle shot to show a characters vulnerability  We used this angle in the death shot of one of the policemen. 
  7. If I had an opportunity to remake the clip I would change a few things. I would fade my scenes into each other in order to make it look more professional  rather than just jumping from scene to scene. I would also add more sound effects such as a gun shot or police siren. Finally I would add a backing track in order to make it look more professional but also reinforce that the clip is a crime drama video.
  8. Three things I will take from this are that I know understand how certain camera shots,angles and movemtns can be used to give information to the audience and portray a character in a certain way. I have also learnt how to desaturate an image when editing and how to colour pick specific parts of a clip. Finally I will take how to upload and import clips.
  9. The positive feedback from the audience was that we used good effects such as the chroma key and desaturate. Furthermore our creative flair but also following the script was given as a positive. A negative feedback from this or an area to improve upon was to use more sound effects or a backing track as well as dissolving into each new scene rather than just jumping into it, to make it look more professional.
  10. My individual role in my group for this task was that I starred as one of the police officers. I also filmed the scenes that I was not involved in. And I also was the editor of our clio, shortening the sequence as well as adding effects.
